We are saddened by the untimely passing of Kobe Bryant and the other 8 victims, including his daughter, GiGi. Just weeks before his passing, on December 30, 2019, Kobe filed a trademark application for the mark, MAMBACITA for clothing. MAMBACITA was GiGi's nickname.

The application was filed as an intent to use application. The application will be examined within 3 months. If there are no issues, the application will be published for opposition. If there is no opposition, the USPTO will issue a Notice of Allowance. They will be given 6 months to show use of the mark or file an extension of time to show use in 6 month increments, up to 36 months. Proof of use must be shown to get the trademark registered.

We are somewhat comforted to know that it's hopeful that GiGi's legacy will live on through her trademark/brand and her clothing. Trademarks are required to be renewed every 5-6 years, but as long as the mark is continuously used, the mark will remain registered. Coca-Cola has owned their mark since the 1800s!
